Nottingham Evening Post Review By William Ruff
"The Nottingham Festival Chorus's performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis was an heroic achievement - and by rights the city's bells should be pealing for them.
So were they note-perfect throughout the work's 90 minutes of strenuous complexity? I think the performers would be surprised if I said 'yes'. But there is no doubt that they caught in both hands the spirit of the Mass and hurled it rejoicingly towards the audience.
The Missa Solemnis is not just difficult to perform flawlessly. It is impossible. Most conductors avoid it - but not conductor Angela Kay. Her ambitions for her various groups of singers know no bounds and on Saturday she offered them the ultimate challenge. And I have never known a conductor, a choir, a solo quartet and an orchestra work so hard in the service of great music.
You knew her approach was going to work from the opening bar. The attack and energy of the opening word 'Kyrie' gave it lift and spoke loudly that this was going to be a Missa Solemnis that soared heavenwards. Phrases were intelligently shaped; there was excellent balance between choral sections and there were plenty of sharp, dramatic contrasts between the exultant, the tender and the fiercely assertive.
The four young soloists (Paula Sides, Clara Hendrick, Nick Pritchard and Tim Dickinson) were all fresh-voiced, alert to meaning and capable of serving the Mass's fierce technical demands.
The chief difficulty that performers have with work is that Beethoven often uses human voices as if they are musical instruments - and seems to ignore their limitations. The choir coped admirably with his vocal extremes and had a good stab at clarifying musical textures, even when the vocal lines are at their most intricately complex.
So Saturday was a day to remember in the history of Nottingham's music- making."
