Pentrich and South Wingfield 25th July 2009

We started from The Dog Inn beside St Matthew’s Church and across the fields to Pentrich Mill, across the road, over the footbridge and beside the river, then along the track to Lodge Hill Farm, a big square building with nasty plastic windows. From here we could see the conical tent in the distance that we had noted on our return journey from Grindleford on Wednesday. We stopped for coffee on the hillside just below Tithe Farm. We were then treated to the most amazing aerobatic display I have ever seen. A single prop engine plane did loop the loop, spins, flying upside down, flying vertically up wards and then stalling. It was both breathtaking and entertaining. We found out from the man who owns Tithe Farm who was also watching with his family that it was the Pentrich Rock and Blues Custom Show which is held nearly every year.

We walked on past Wingfield Manor House (remains of), not much to look at close by but quite a stunning sight as you looked back on it. As we came out of the woods we caught a view of a big new orangery type building in the walled garden of Wingfield Hall. It had a lavish Italianate garden and an eerie view of Wingfield Manor. See photographs.  After we left South Wingfield we started to walk in the field by the river and a girl asked for our help. Her dog had gone in to the river and when she tried to pull it out the lead had come off and fallen into the river. Chris whipped off his boots and socks and waded in to retrieve it. From there we walked beside Shaw Wood and up to the road at Castle Hill then across the field with the Roman Fortlet in it. Although it shows on the aerial photograph there was nothing really noticeable at ground level. We then walked right along the edge of the Rock and Blues Show at Coneygrey Farm – see photographs.

Rowsley, Stanton Woodhouse and Congreave 15th July 2009

We were led round this walk by Keith who has lived in the area for 28 years.  He has been closely involved with paths and the protection of the area for years and was able to give a detailed account of what we saw and tell local stories.  It was a most informative walk.

Eddlestow Lot 24th June 2009

A brilliant walk on a hot summer's day consisting of:  woodland, moorland, pasture, woodland streams and quiet single track roads.  We walked through bracken and nettles up to our arm pits, dung heaps and streams.  As we walked along Cuckoostone Lane I heard the first Cuckoo call I have heard this year.  Perhaps they have nested in that valley for a very long time.  Very many thanks to Alan and Barbara for taking over a walk and for visiting it so many times to make it easy for us.

Hartington 10th June 2009

The weather during this walk was quite a feature.  It rained, it was cold, it was hot, it was still and it was windy.  The weather forecast predicted rain by 3 p.m.  The walk finished at 2.50 just as the rain started.  The photographs show that the views were quite limited because of the weather conditions.  However, the view as you return to Hartington is memorable.

This was was led by Ken and Viv and was based upon walks which feature in a book edited by Ken called 'In the Footsteps of Our Ancestors: Heritage Walks: Hartington - Alstonefield - Wetton - Wetton Mill - Warslow - Hulme End'.  It was a fascinating walk with lots of detailed information about the history of the use of the land.   There were some spectacular views along the way as well as some interesting flora and fauna.

The Roaches 13th May 2009

Wicked winds and stunning views!  The weather forecast did not quite predict what happened on this walk.  It was grey: expected.  It rained a little: expected.  The wind from the East, note that the sharp edge is on the west, was evil.  It felt as though it was strong enough to pick up a human body and move it elsewhere.  The walk could be described as "a good breath of fresh air".

We walked more or less the same route as last time but turned right off Winn Lane and went to the very top of Madge Hill.  The views are spectacular all round.

Atlow Second Attempt

Goyt Valley 29th April 2009

The meeting point was at Bunsal Cob car park.  On getting out of the car I could hear a spotted woodpecker in the nearby trees.  Four cars full of members of the group were driven up to the car park by the lake from which point we started the walk.  Apparently, the lake was created to provide water for the steam engine that operated on the railway line.  We followed the route of the dismantled railway until we met the tunnel and then we climbed the hill to Beet Wood where we stopped for coffee.  From there we walked a short distance on the road to Plex Farm and then rejoined the railway track until it met the road.  At that point we went up on to the moor and dropped down by Berry Clough.  There were Curlews, Skylarks, Pheasants and Partridges up on the moor.  Lunch was taken by the rebuilt Pack Horse Bridge.  From there we went across Wild Moor and beside the Reservoir to Bunsal Cob. 6.94 miles in total.

Wardlow 15th April 2009

The walk started at the car park (185715) at 10.30.  We stopped for coffee at the top of Black Plantation.  The conditions were really quite wintery as we crossed Longstone Moor, indeed it was too misty to take photographs for much of the walk.  There were quite a few people in Cressbrook Dale showing that it was still Easter Holidays for some.  This was a really enjoyable walk with a couple of demanding slopes as the profile shows.

Rowthorne and Pleasley Trails 8th April 2009

The walk started at the car park (477648) near Rowthorne village and went along the trail to the footpath that leads to the village.  At the junction with the road we turned right and followed the road to the right angle bend and then along the track up to the Pleasley Pit area.  We then did a circuit of the pit area passing the ponds and finally joined the Trail again.  There are a number of other trails in the are which we may well go back and look at another day.

Bakewell and Haddon Fields 25th March 2009

We started at the old station (223689) on Station Road in pouring rain and quite strong winds but by the time we had reached the riverside the sun was out.  Stopped at Haddon Barn for coffee and shortly afterwards a short account of the history of Haddon Hall and Chatsworth.  The third field up the hill was very muddy and crossing the final field on the hillside it was really windy.  It seemed a short stroll back down to Bakewell and we were back at the car park at about 1.00pm.

Atlow Triangle 18th March 2009

We started near the entrance to Highfields farm where there was space to park near the stream and walked up Winn Lane.  Unfortunately, I missed the sign near the W of Winn on the map and we walked along the track to Shaws where we went directly up the hill having played with the very friendly dog who came to share his bone with us.  When we returned I found that the path I should have followed shows up very clearly on the aerial photograph on Multimap as seen here.  We had a chat with a man at Atlow Winn where we discovered that we shared his enthusiasm for mushroom compost purchased from Highfields Farm (we have been using it for twenty years on our allotments).  From Atlow Winn we walked across the field to Madge Hill and then down hill along the well worn track to Corley.  From there, we took the track beside the stream to Atlow Lane and then down the hill back to the car.  It was too misty to take photographs at the start of the walk but the sun came out and we had a really beautiful walk in quiet countryside.  Because it was so undisturbed we heard and saw lots of wildlife.

Two Dales 11th March 2009

Start at the picnic site at SK270624 and walk southwards towards the pub, turn left and cross the fields to the railway line.  Walk beside DFS and cross the main road.  Cross the fields to Holt Farm and turn right.  Walk up the valley at Ladygrove going past Fancy Dam and Potter Dam on the left.  At the foot bridge cross the river and walk straight to Sydnope Hall Farm.  There is a good view of Sydnope Hall to your right as you cross the field. It was the residence of Francis Sacheverel Darwin, a son of Charles Darwin's grandfather, Erasmus by his second marriage. Left along the B 5073 to the brow of the hill and then turn right along the track.  After the houses turn left across the field and head for the woodland of Halldale Wood which is managed by the Woodland Trust.  Walk northwards to the point to cross the stream and then back down the track to the road system.

Bamford Edge 25th February 2009

The starting point was the car park at Heatherdene SK202858 where there are excellent toilet facilities and plenty of picnic tables.  We then walked southwards and turned left up the hill at the end of the woods.  Once on the top we followed the wall until we saw the clear path along the edge.  The last part of this circular walk is along the rail track which is now part of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way.

Osmaston Park 23rd February 2009

We started the walk on Park Lane opposite Shirley House and walked towards Osmaston.  It really was as though we were walking on private land as we saw only one couple.  Excellent walking except for crossing the brook at the end of Greave's Wood.  The ground was saturated and it was not possible to cross without having wet feet.

Brassington, Ballidon and Bradbourne 11th February 2009

Start at the car park at 234547, turn right into the village and up Red Lion Hill.  Take the footpath across the fields up the hill to Pasture Lane.  Walk down the lane and cross the main road, cross the fields until you come to the church.  Then take the track until you cross the road again and then follow the signs up the hill to the church.  In the churchyard is the burial place of Sir Alan Bates and members of his family and after you have walked through the village you will pass Bank House which is where he lived, apparently.  Take the path sign posted before Park Farm across the field to Nether Lane and back to Brassington.  Lunch at the Hanging Gate which has not changed in the slightest in the thirty four years since I first visited it.

Parked at 444384 and did the 10km circuit as marked on the map.  Conditions very wet underfoot which made the walk quite hard work.  It was a fascinating walk where we passed by Hopwell Hall.  Stopped to look at All Saints Church at Dale Abbey.

Duffield and Burley Wood

Park in the car park near the toilets in the centre of Duffield.  Cross the main road and walk along Tamworth Street and beside the river through Ecclesbourne Meadows.

Cross the B5023 and head for the woods at Spring Carr, walk through Champion Farm – note the architecture. Cross the Cumberhills Road, the footpath sign is lost in the hedge.  The path follows the field edge to The Common.  Turn left down a driveway – way marked and go along the bottom of the gardens of Montpellier.  Stop at the millennium thingy on Bunkers Hill.  Note the viewing tower on the modern house on the right.  Down the hill through Flaxholme, cross the A6 and walk diagonally across the field to the railway line.  Cross the road and walk diagonally across the field opposite Duffield Hall and back along the main road to the car park.

Farnah Green, Midshires Way, Belper Lane End, Wyver Lane

Our Route notes

Started at the car park just off the (SK335462) Chevin, up the path onto Chevin turn left and drop off the hill to Farnah Green, cross the road and walk beside Lumb Brook, turn right on the track and walk down to the ford. Cross the A57 and turn left up Longwalls Lane  (Midshires Way marked).  Follow the Midshires Way along the ridge to SK329498 Then turn right down the path between the two walls. Be aware of noisy, chained up dog at the bottom in the farm yard. Take the road opposite the Pub and take the path which is before the first house on the left.  The path goes round the mound surmounted by Wyver wood.  Through Wyver Farm and down the track to the lake.  Follow the lane to the bridge over the river.  Took photos here of the new communal garden.

Path beside the river and take the third right turn path off it and up the hill – it is where the path is nearest to the river. Follow the obvious path up the hill and on to The Chevin and returned to the car park.

Total Distance: 6.43 miles

Total Ascent: 315.5 m.
